So, I went through my past, and came across a thesis written in 1972: it was my first introduction to this field of Disaster Medicine. By reviewing some of what was written then, and connecting it to what you have been discussing during the past two days and with what is being addressed around the world, I hope that the Road Ahead becomes a little clearer, presumably because it already is a Road on which we are travelling together. I have no intention of telling you where I think the Road is, but rather to challenge you to see if you can figure it out for yourselves.

Road Departure Avoidance System Based on the Driver Decision Estimator
In this paper a robust road departure avoidance system based on a closed-loop driver decision estimator (DDE) is presented. The main idea is that of incorporating the driver intent in the control of the vehicle. The driver decision estimator computes the vehicle look ahead lateral position based on the driver input and uses this position to establish the risk of road departure. To induce a risk...
متن کاملLook-ahead Control of Heavy Trucks utilizing Road Topography
The power to mass ratio of a heavy truck causes even moderate slopes to have a significant influence on the motion. The velocity will inevitable vary within an interval that is primarily determined by the ratio and the road topography. If further variations are actuated by a controller, there is a potential to lower the fuel consumption by taking the upcoming topography into account. This possi...
متن کاملUsing CART to Segment Road Images
The 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge is a 132 mile race through the desert with autonomous robotic vehicles. Lasers mounted on the car roof provide a map of the road up to 20 meters ahead of the car but the car needs to see further in order to go fast enough to win the race. Computer vision can extend that map of the road ahead but desert road is notoriously similar to the surrounding desert. The CAR...
متن کاملRoad Grade Estimation for Look-Ahead Vehicle Control
Look-ahead cruise controllers and other advanced driver assistance systems for heavy duty vehicles require high precision digital maps. This contribution presents a road grade estimation algorithm for creation of such maps based on Kalman filter fusion of vehicle sensor data and GNSS positioning information. The algorithm uses data from multiple traversals of the same road to improve previously...
متن کاملPredicting the future of information technology and society [The Road Ahead]
h A YEAR AGO, this column contemplated the road ahead for semiconductor-based products that build on basic design, test, process, and device technologies. In late 2011, a workshop on the ‘‘Future of IT and Society’’ presented several broad visions of how societal changes will build on semiconductor-based products and information technology in such contexts as social mobility, healthcare, securi...
متن کاملFuel Optimal Powertrain Control for Heavy Trucks Utilizing Look Ahead
The road topography in highways affects the powertrain control of a heavy truck substantially since the engine power is low in relation to the vehicle weight. In large road gradients constant speed is not possible to keep, which would have been beneficial otherwise, and in some uphills shifting gears becomes inevitable. If information about the road ahead, i.e. look ahead information, is availa...
